THOSE who havent heard about Capoeira would probably ask..."Is it a martial art?"..."Is it a dance?"..."How do you practice it?"..."What are those musical instruments being played?"
400 years ago, during the time when Brazil was still colonized by Portugal, slaves from Angola were brought in to work at sugarcane fields.
As part of their culture and tradition, the angolan slaves also brought with them their dances and music to Brazil. However,they were prohibited to practice any form of exercise that involves fighting. Realizing that they need to protect themselves from the maltreatment of their landlords, they used their music and practiced fight moves in disguise of a dance.
This gave birth to the martial art now known as Capoeira. Capoeira was the slaves' way of physical resistance against their oppressors and became a significant part of their culture at that time.
At present, capoeira has grown and is practiced anywhere in the world,showcasing the rich history and culture of Brazil.
Here in Japan, our main objective is to continue working on increasing knowledge and showing the beauty of this art to the rest of the world.

It is not just an exercise for the body but also for one's mind, spirit, and day to day living as it is also one philosophy of life. There is no discrimination in age, gender or race but it is for everyone who wants to understand and practice the art.
